We are so excited to make our learning environment even better!
How has COVID-19 affected Alma Fuerte?
For the first week and a half of COVID19 closures, like everyone else, we expected to be returning after Spring Break. Our teachers quickly churned out leveled packets that we distributed to our students. As we approached Spring Break, we learned that Distance Learning would be extended indefinitely so we set out to create a daily schedule for our families to follow. Just like at school, creating a predictable routine helps students feel safe, and safe students are ready to learn!
We worked to improve our website to help parents find the information that they needed, we distributed chrome books, and provided best practices for families to employ at home. For the first day of distance learning, we divided each class into small leveled groups of about 5 students. Each group meets with the teacher for an hour. Any students that struggles to understand the lesson is then invited to a study hall where they receive direct attention from the teacher.
Our associate teachers have been integral in helping our zoom session run smoothly. Our Teacher's Assistants support our teachers by taking attendance, taking note of student engagement/ understanding. They have also been an immense asset in handling the technological part of distance learning, helping parents get set up, troubleshoot, as well as muting/un-muting students to help manage participation. We are very proud of the effort put forth by our staff, our students, and our parents.
We pride ourselves in being transparent and will continue to update you on our strengths, challenges, and lessons learned. We encourage you to keep your ear to the ground - COVID19 is changing education drastically at a very fast pace. There is a lot is up in the air right now for everyone but we hope to provide a clear path to your child's education so that you can feel at ease with your child's transition to a new learning environment.
Distance Learning Schedule
For the duration of Distance Learning, each class will be broken up into 3, smaller, leveled cohorts. Our students receive daily direct instruction.
Plan for Socially Distance Hybrid Program
Each class will be split into two cohorts of no more than 12 students each. Each cohort will have it's own classroom to minimize cross-contamination.
Students will remain with their cohort all day and will take turns so that only one cohort will be outside at a time. Breakfast, Snack, and Lunch will also be eaten in the classroom to prevent cross contamination. Every period the teacher and the associate teacher will switch between the cohorts so that the groups get equal learning and social time/ project time.
Mondays will be a no-student day so that teachers can plan and organize the week. Our intention is that families who would like to send their kids to school for the other 4 days will be able to do so. We are able to host everyone at one time as we have the staff and the space to do so. Families that do not want to send their kids in will be working online instead.
Tea with Keay
We continue to host bi-weekly meetings with our admin staff called "Tea with Keay," for parents. During Tea with Keay, we provide updates and ask for community feedback.
